Automaker Toyota was ranked #17 by MIT Technology Review on their list of the 50 Smartest Companies of 2016.
This ranking has placed Toyota among respected tech leaders such as Amazon, Alphabet and Facebook. Additionally, they have ranked ahead of other tech bigwigs such as Microsoft, IBM and Intel. While Tesla Motors came in at #4 on the list, Toyota has the distinction of being one of only two automakers to make it onto the list of the world's 50 smartest companies.
MIT Technology Review, a global media company backed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is recognized nationally for its coverage of science, business and technology. To make the list, editors "pick the 50 companies that best combine innovative technology with an effective business model."

So, what made MIT Technology Review recognize Toyota? The Toyota Research Institute. Founded in November of 2015, the institute studies "the future of mobility, artificial intelligence, and robotics." The magazine also highlighted Toyota’s release of the Mirai, one of the world’s first mass-market hydrogen fuel vehicles, and Toyota’s efforts to develop "a network of accessible and reliable hydrogen fuel stations" to support the Mirai and other potential future hydrogen vehicles. The Mirai has a range of over 300 miles and emits only water vapor.
